The Outback which covers a vast amount of area. But I would say Alice Springs, But thats basically desert.

You can also try the Blue mountains in New South Wales and the Victorian Alps.

A better option for your traveling preferences would be the South Island if New Zealand. They have great untouched environments that isolates you from the rest of the human world.

Try the Mountains & fjords of New Zealand. Its breathtaking!

I mean it would be no different traveling to the other side of Australia. theres no traveling visas needed for Aussies travelling to NZ.

I don't know how it works in Australia, but in America, camping is almost always at state campgrounds, which are patrolled by park rangers, not police. The park rangers drive past periodically to make sure you aren't breaking any camp rules, so as long as alcohol is allowed there you shouldn't have a problem. Just don't do anything stupid, like get really loud so that you bother other campers, or drink so much that you have to go to the hospital.

Yes you certainly can. I have done it several times. April May is a perfect time as the start of the tourist season and the end of the wet season. The roads are sealed all the way some stretches are narrow . Through the Kimberlies they have the most fabulous lightening displays but you will probably missed those. Stay away from the rivers those crocs are big . There are some very interesting places to see If you can take a trip up the Fitzroy river that is super Kunnanarra is a great town and a trip into Lake Argyle is really good. Youll love it. You don't need a 4wd unless you want to go off the beaten track . A campervan would be good but a car would be ok as well

The wet season finishes in March so you should be fine driving. I have done this trip myself and I would recommend a 4-wheel drive - then you can get off the beaten track. I would also recommend (unless you are very well researched and prepared) taking a guided camping tour through the Kimberleys. These guys really know the best places to see and the best places to camp at. It is a truely spectacular part of the world. We slept in swags under the moonlight, saw amazing wildlife and saw some beautiful scenery. It helps to be fairly fit - you have to hike and climb to see a lot of the gorges and waterfalls. Just remember it is very remote and isolated. I'm not sure where your from so I don't if you appreciate how so. I suggest you Google "Kimberleys" for lots of information.

That's a long straight drive so I would definitely reccomend some stops. There's Hervey Bay, the caves north of Rockhampton, 1770 is a nice little fishing town. Townsville's worth an overnight stop (their museum is quite good if your into that sort of thing)

Oh and around Innisfail there is a place called Paronella Park, it's a large ruined Spanish castle that was built by a cane farmer years and years ago. It sounds odd, but is a really beautiful spot.

Closer to Sydney you could pop up to Maitland, it a bit in land but a nice town, if not a little strange. (Go to the jail if you go there, it's worth the stop)

It is a fine bitumen road that was built for all but the worst weathers. It is at worst the end of the wet season and for the most part the beginning of the dry. I wouldn't worry about it and plan to go. It is still possible for there to be a tropical cyclone or some very heavy rain but that is very rare at that time. You should have a great trip and you will arrive in Darwin before the major influx of tourists.

I am in Darwin at the moment and was here last March and April. All roads were open then and no-one talked of them being flooded.

Have a lovely trip, you will enjoy it. Stop off at all the bush pubs on the way like Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Timber Creek etc. You'll have a great time.
