tommyboy asked: Hi there, Im planning an action packed holiday to Australia. We arrive August 1st leave 31st out of Sydney. Im diving in Cairns the week before we are due to go home, and I am motoring up with the family in a camper up the east coast.....but....what is worth seeing and what isn't? Where are the real senic spots? South of Brisbane or north of Brisbane? What are the must see places? Your thoughts are all most appreciated.....

That’s a long straight drive so I would definitely reccomend some stops. There’s Hervey Bay, the caves north of Rockhampton, 1770 is a nice little fishing town. Townsville’s worth an overnight stop (their museum is quite good if your into that sort of thing)
Oh and around Innisfail there is a place called Paronella Park, it’s a large ruined Spanish castle that was built by a cane farmer years and years ago. It sounds odd, but is a really beautiful spot.
Closer to Sydney you could pop up to Maitland, it a bit in land but a nice town, if not a little strange. (Go to the jail if you go there, it’s worth the stop)
My favorite places between Sydney and Cairns are The Australia Zoo (Cricky), Rainbow Beach, Frazer Island, Rockhampton, the Atherton tablelands and virtually every sandy beach along the way. Allow plenty of time, and get off the main highway for side trips every chance you get. I am a bit old fashioned- I do not particularly like the Gold Coast and all its traffic and tourists, although Sea World is a nice place to spend a day. The best of downtown Brissie is a dinner cruise on the river, unless you are into retail shopping. The park on the river is neat. Enjoy the trip!
travelling up the east coast of australia. welcome to sunny Queensland beautiful one day perfect the next!!! great weather at present I am in far north Qld. gorgeous weather.
travelling from sydney I guess – stop at byron bay, tweed heads on the border, you could stop at the theme parks on the way to bne, (dreamworld, sea world, movie world, water world) go past bne to sunshine coast, hervey bay, caloundra is nice, visit the glass house mountains, stop at 1770 yes it is a nice fishing town, bundaberg, rockhampton, townsville visit the tropic of museum, cultural centre, magnetic island, go to paronella park outside innisfail and flying fish point, on the way to cairns stop at the babinda boulders, cairns visit green island, stop at beaches on the way – there are plenty of beaches in all towns. I would say thats plenty of stops in between up and back. have a great holiday good time to visit
I know of people who spend a month just driving between Sydney and Brisbane, theres so many places along our coastline to marval at , too many to mention, but I’ll suggest a few, Nelson bay, approx 180km’s nth of Sydney is a nice little spot, great beaches and fishing, village like atmosphere etc, further up you have Byron Bay, excellent beaches, arty farty kind of place, heaps of backpackers and alternative life stylers and whacky baccy aplenty, The Gold Coast just sth of Brissy has all the theme parks, bit pricey, but worth it. Frazer Island further on just nth of Brissy, camel rides and four wheel driving on the beach is popular, Bit further on you come to sub tropical terrain, Beautiful rain forests with all the native wildlife you can handle, and then, the finale, you reach Gods country, Bunderburg (home of Australia’s best rum) a million km’s of sugar cain and it’s just bliss from there to Cairns and Cooktown. Everything between Sydney to Cairns is a must see for travelers, twelve months oughta do it.
