We are travelling from Sydney to Cairns on a 3 month trip and we can not decide whether to hire or buy a camper van. Anyone have any suggestions or guidence on this matter?
3 months is not worth buying unless you are extremely lucky and get a super duper buy and are able to sell it easy . which mostly is not the case. so it could cost you an awful lot of money especially if you where to have a breakdown and pay a thousand or 2 to get it fixed. If you hire you should get a deal for 3 months . it won’t be cheap but you don’t have the worry of breakdowns and the added stress of trying to sell it.
Try checking a couple of the Caravan magazines sometimes you can swap your home for a caravan for the 3 month period.
I think the main magazine is the wanderer
I’m not sure whether buying a van would be the best idea, unless you do somehow find an awesome deal that you just can’t pass up.
I’m not sure what level of comfort you’re looking for, or how many people you’re planning on accommodating, but if it’s just 2-3 people, and you’re not too fussy, I would definitely recommend Wicked Campers to hire the van from. I did a relatively short 2 week trip with one in July, and it was seriously a lot of fun. They are very cheap to hire, because they’re painted up on the outside with bright colours and characters, which advertises the company. It’s a great talking point to meeting people as well. You get free roadside assistance if you break down (or lock the keys in the van like I did) so that saves a lot of money on callout fees if you were to buy the van instead.
The back of the van transforms into a bed at night and table during the day….and there’s also a mini-kitchen area with a sink and gas-burner.
If you’re after something small and cheap, I reckon you should have a look at them.
I see the funy Wicked Vans around a lot but they are not very luxurious.
Buying gives you the option to recoup some money. I am not sure if the big gun sellers like Winnebago offer a buy back scheme but there always seems to be very cool 2nd hand models available fromn the dealership down the road but you’s be looking at $20,000 for a flash one with a shower and all the mod cons…
Depending on what you are after, you could hire a car and stay in caravan parks (on the east coast they are generally in the best locations and under $50/night), or pitch a tent for even less.
We have done Brisbane to Cairns driving and just stayed in Motels for about $100-$150/night as well as in a campervan and had the BEST time both times!!
Have fun and good luck getting a great deal. Don’t forget to pick up a mud crab crab sanga in Miriam Vale!!

I think it would cost a small fortune to hire…
