The land is always owned by someone. If you want an overnight stop off the road then you would probably be OK parking anywhere but if you want to stay a few nights, ask the landowner. I’ve camped all over the country in campsites and in the bush with no problems.
Every town and village in Australia has a camping area and so does just about every national park. They provide facilities like power, toilets and showers. If you want to forgo such luxuries then just ask the landowner for permission to camp. You shouldn’t have any problems if you ask.
Many local government areas/councils have by-laws which prohibit you from camping in places like car parks, sidestreets and reserves.
Whilst it is unlikey that you will be caught and fined, the reality is that it CAN happen and that just parking anywhere you fancy is not allowed.
However, you will be relieved to know that there is an extensive network of parks and reserves where camping is permitted, and these usually provide at least basic amenities.
There are rest areas all around Australia , You are encouraged to take a break . You will see cars and trucks parked up in many areas . Some have a 24 or 48 hour restriction on them. Along many of the highways you will see a sign telling you rest area in so many ks and they usually have one 5 kilometres away . Some of them are large and well known to caravaners so if you get to talk to any of them just ask them where the good ones are. Some have toilets not many have water and if they have it is probably not fit to drink unless you are just outside of a town. You can buy books Bush camping around Australia. or Bush camping in WA etc. Some books are better than others. Some of the stops say trucks only but there is usually another you can stop at not far away.
