I live in sydney and I had a very memorable night camping (sleeping with blankets rather) on newcastle beach under the stars. Nobody there but you and your mates. It was truly fantastic... I was blown away cause usually newcastle is rather daggy at times.. we spent the money we saved by camping on a delicious thai dinner!

It is illegal to camp, but people do it. Just make sure n0-one is around to see you set up.

I have always found Jervis Bay on the south coast to be beautiful. Another nice place is Seven Mile Beach.
But you will need to book, as Easter will be packed at any campground (and full of snivelling children).

If you really want to go free range, try to get access to a 4WD and sneak along some of the fire tracks anywhere south of Nowra. You can even have your own beach to yourself. Try to get a map of the fire trails from the National Parks site. Also, go to NRMA and get a camping and caravaning book. They are around $10 for members.

The Royal National Park is a good place, its not 100% beach front, but ive camped at Bundeena, you have to pay a small camping fee and theres toilets and showers and stuff there too, id highly recommend it. I know its illegal to rock up on any beaches in the Eurobodalla shire and camp, on the south coast. Not sure about the other ones, but all Australian foreshore is managed by National parks and wildlife.
I just remembered there are tonnes of van parks where u can camp and stuff near batemans bay that are beachfront!
